Tun Dr. Mahathir
bin Mohamad
Chairman, Board of Trustees
Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is a prominent Malaysian politician and statesman who served as the Prime Minister of Malaysia in two non-consecutive terms. His first term, from 1981 to 2003, is notable for his transformative impact on Malaysia's economic and infrastructural development. During this period, he spearheaded policies that drove rapid industrialisation, modernised Malaysia’s infrastructure, and positioned the country as an emerging economic power in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Mahathir’s tenure was marked by significant projects, including the development of Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Federal Territory of Putrajaya, the creation of the Multimedia Super Corridor, and the establishment of several high-profile institutions. His leadership style was characterised by strong central authority and ambitious economic reforms.
After stepping down in 2003, Dr. Mahathir remained an influential figure in Malaysian politics, actively critiquing and influencing policy. He returned to power in May 2018, leading the Pakatan Harapan coalition to a historic victory in the general elections, thus becoming the world's oldest sitting head of government at the age of 92. His second term focused on reforming governance and combating corruption.
Beyond his political career, Dr. Mahathir is a prolific author and speaker on subjects ranging from education, economics to global politics and innovation. His contributions to Malaysia’s development and his unique position in global politics have established him as a significant figure in contemporary history.
